Love Anyway

I've spent a lot of time in my car during my commutes lately
trying to figure out what words I can say
to help try to understand senseless deaths.

I try to understand
what we have programmed in us
that makes us say,
"Well, my way is right,
so anyone who defies my way needs to suffer for it."

We cling to our weapons
our beliefs
our traditions
as if what we've always done,
what we've always known,
is absolutely right and good.

We cling to these things

to the point where we decided
that other people DESERVE to die.

There's no other way around it.
Their life is too different;
I'm too scared;
I'm too sad.
Someone else must die for that.

And we're paralyzed into inaction,
because in order for things to get better,
WE have to change, too.
Sometimes we have to go first.

"Well THOSE people are doing horrible things!"

Without even a second thought

that maybe we're the horrible ones.

So, what should we do about it?
